Operation Prato (Operation Plate) was a Brazilian Air Force investigation conducted between 1977 and 1978, prompted by reported UFO sightings in Colares, Pará.
In 1977, residents of Colares, Pará, reported frequent UFO encounters, claiming attacks by flying saucers. Witnesses described glowing objects of various shapes, sizes, and colors flying low—just above treetops—emitting beams of light at people on the ground. Locals called these beams “Chupa Chupa” (Sucker-Sucker) due to their effects.
Victims reported to local media feeling a “heavy weight” pressing on their chests during these incidents. A report detailed the beams as white, approximately three to four inches in diameter, striking suddenly. Victims couldn’t scream, though their eyes stayed open, and the beams felt hot, similar to a cigarette burn.
Dr. Wellaide Cecim Carvalho, a health unit worker in the region during the 1970s, documented injuries: “Victims had lesions on their face or chest, resembling radiation burns, starting with intense redness, followed by hair loss and skin blackening. There was slight warmth but no pain. Small bite marks were also observed.” These injuries affected men and women of all ages, with no clear pattern.
To ward off the lights, Colares residents held night vigils, lit bonfires, and used fireworks, as requested by Mayor José Ildone Favacho Soeiro.
