Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in December 2016.

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a cat named Hidey had been suffering from an extreme case of matting that turned her fur into massive dreadlocks, weighing a staggering 2 pounds – equivalent to a small bag of rice or a pineapple. This harrowing tale sheds light on the importance of pet care and the unfortunate circumstances some animals endure.

Hidey’s unfortunate predicament began when her elderly owner, who was battling Alzheimer’s disease, had to be moved to a nursing home. In the chaos of this transition, Hidey and another cat named Siam were left behind. The man’s distant relative, Paul Russel, stepped in when he realized there were cats in the home.

Russel discovered Hidey in a horrifying condition. Her fur was so severely matted that she looked like she had a blanket draped over her, which she dragged along. It was only upon closer inspection that he realized the blanket was, in fact, Hidey’s matted fur. Terrified and in pain, she had taken refuge in the cellar.

Rescue efforts quickly swung into action as Hidey was taken to the Animal Rescue League and Wildlife Shelter in Pittsburgh. The vet team was astounded by her condition, describing it as a unique case. Hidey’s fur had become a burden, and it took general anesthesia to safely shave off her dreadlocks. It was evident that this matting had developed over several years, further complicated by Hidey’s weight issues.

Hidey’s obesity made it difficult for her to groom herself, leading to the formation of these painful mats. Proper pet care, including regular brushing, might have prevented this horrific situation. Unfortunately, her elderly owner’s deteriorating health likely prevented him from providing the necessary care.

After receiving much-needed medical attention, Hidey was discharged from the vet hospital and found refuge with Paul Russel and his family. She is on the path to recovery, gradually gaining confidence and adjusting to her new life. She has already started showing signs of improvement, venturing out from her hiding spot and seeking more interaction with people.

Hidey’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership. It highlights the importance of regular grooming and care, particularly for cats with long fur. While Hidey’s ordeal was heart-wrenching, her journey toward healing and happiness is a testament to the resilience of animals and the compassion of those who stepped in to help her regain her life.
