The first critical step was to safely drain and remove the highly toxic formaldehyde, a hazardous chemical that had been both her preservation fluid and, in her neglected state, a source of her continued degradation. This was replaced with glycerol, a much safer and more stable preservation fluid that would ensure her long-term integrity without the toxicity. The tank itself also needed significant repair and sealing.
Today, Rosie the shark rests at Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys. She is no longer a macabre curiosity in an abandoned park but a properly maintained and ethically displayed exhibit. Visitors can now view her in a controlled environment, free from the elements and neglect she once endured.
